Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium. Past about 120 mg/L it starts quietly costing you — in scale, in soap, and in appliances that die early.
Published municipal averages. Actual hardness shifts by pressure zone and season — an on-site test is the only way to know yours.
Most homes need one of the first two. If you're on a well, you need the third and it needs a water sample before anyone can quote it honestly.
For municipal supply on lake water. Takes the calcium out before it reaches anything.
Softened water everywhere, plus reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap and the fridge line.
Caledon, King, Uxbridge, Halton Hills, north Durham. Quoted after a lab sample, never before.
Optional service plan at from $14/month — annual filter changes, UV lamp replacement, yearly check. Cancel whenever. It isn't required to keep your warranty.
Most companies in this trade won't show you this. It isn't complicated, and understanding it is the difference between buying a system and being sold one.
Everything in the house runs through the softener — including the feed to the RO, because softened water is what stops the membrane scaling. So the hot water tank only ever sees softened water, except during the hour or so the softener regenerates overnight. That's where the appliance-life saving comes from. Reverse osmosis stays a separate, smaller unit under the kitchen sink, because you don't need drinking-grade water in your shower.
Softening is a swap, not a filter. The resin beads are loaded with sodium; calcium and magnesium bind to the resin more strongly, so as hard water passes through, the calcium sticks and sodium is released in its place. The water isn't purified or stripped — the hardness is held on the resin and traded for sodium, which doesn't form scale. The exchange is charge-for-charge, so each calcium ion is replaced by two sodium ions: roughly 7.85 mg/L of sodium per grain of hardness removed. When the beads are full, a salt rinse flushes the calcium to drain and the cycle restarts.
Well water is a sequence, and the order is not negotiable. Sediment goes first or it destroys everything downstream. Iron and sulphur must come out before the softener, because iron fouls the resin permanently. Softening follows. Ultraviolet disinfection goes last — UV only works on water that's already clear, since any remaining particle casts a shadow a bacterium can hide in. A system plumbed in the wrong order can look right and fail within a year.
The national providers rent softeners at $30–$48 a month with no end date. Move the sliders and find the month where renting overtakes simply buying the thing.
Rental range reflects published 2026 GTA rates. Purchase range reflects installed market pricing. Salt and servicing excluded — you pay those either way.
